Vista-64 bit-java applets

A friend of mine purchased a new Vista Ultimate with the 64 bit..
She does stationary and java applets and so far has not been able to get the settings correct for viewing applets.
Someone told her it is impossible to use Java with a 64 bit..
I am trying to find out if it is possible so that I can help her get her computer set up for viewing..

I also read that this computer may have the 32 bit and the 64 bit option..
How would you find out, and how could you change it..

Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated..
