I purchased an emachine in February 2009. I needed a new computer with enough memory to handle Dragon Naturally Speaking software so that I could work from home. My old PC would not handle the additional ram/rom that was required.
My problems started when the trial version of Norton Antivirus expired. I kept getting that annoying message to purchase it because the trial period had ended. I wanted to Webroot which I purchased when I bought the emachine. The only way to get rid of Norton was to uninstall it and install Webroot. Once I did that my computer went crazy. It lit up like a Christmas tree. Multiple windows opened up saying?this file was infected, that file was infected. My computer screen was literally covered with these messages.
I was told the only way to fix it was to bring it back to Best Buy and have their Geek Squad repair it for $129+, or to wipe the computer clean by reinstall the Windows Vista operating system. Since the compute did not come with the operating disk, this was not an option (which I think is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of, and I believe almost every computer purchaser would agree).
I ended up installing Windows XP (SP2) operating system that came with my old computer. Needless to say the problems did not end there. The Ethernet (network adapter) would no longer connect to internet and I could not download work from the FTP site I used. I was told that the network adapter was binded to Windows Vista and would not work with XP. So I purchased a new network adapter. So now the emachine has two adapters. After that I could get to the internet but, still no FTP or Instant Messaging. Then the computer started shutting down on its own?and even stranger, it would try to turn on by itself.
I told emachine customer support about the problems. They had me test to see if the computer was overheating. It was not. They had me perform a test to see if the hard drive was the problem. It was not. Then they said I must reinstall Windows Vista and that I had to pay $20 for the disk that should have come with the computer to begin with. After having no other choice I ordered the disk, reinstall Windows Vista several times, and the computer still shuts down.
When I called customer support to tell them this, they now tell me I need to ship the computer to their office for further inspection and repair. This is absurd. They have not done enough diagnosing over the phone with me to eliminate other possible problems.
Did they try to determine if there were software issues? No
Did they try to determine if it was the cause of the virus? No
Did they ask for information from the Event Viewer to help assess the problem? No
Bottom line? I purchased a new compute to work from home to earn extra income. But instead, between the cost of the computer, Dragon software, foot peddle, and headset, network adapter, and operating disk, I have racked up over $715 in expenses, and have not made a dime. Now I have to spend another $70 to ship the pc out for repair. Frankly, I would rather have my money back for the purchase of this emachine so that I can get a different model.
Anyone working with Windows Vista knows there are compatibility issues. I don?t think emachine put enough research & development this area. The customer support is awful and completely inadequate.
This was the first emachine I have ever purchased and it will be the last.
The sad thing is I told my sister to purchase one of these machines and she is have the shut down problem too. Needless to say, if anyone ask me about emachines it will not be good.
Sincerely,
Anita
