Blizzard Entertainment agree with Gabe Newell’s claim about Windows 8

Rob Pardo, the executive vice president of game design at Blizzard seems to be agreeing with the claims of Valve co-founder and Managing Director Gabe Newell.

He left the following quote on Twitter:

He quoted Newell’s comments on his personal twitter account before adding that Windows 8 is “not awesome for Blizzard either”

This is an interesting new twist that I hadn’t thought about.

Some in the gaming industry are afraid that Windows 8 with it’s Windows Store will becoming a closed ecosystem. They fear that Microsoft will eventually force all independent software developers to sell through the Windows Store – new profits (in the form of commissions) for Microsoft and less profits for these software houses.

It’ll be interesting to see if these murmurs calm down or grow louder as Windows 8 draws nearer…

    Unless Microsoft gets rid of the desktop all together I don’t think software devs have a problem. I don’t think Microsoft can block Windows users from downloading from sites and just buy from the Marketplace? I hear there will be an option to put software in the store which would be good for people who don’t know how to download from a website (and yes there are plenty that don’t).

    I think Valve and Steam may have a little to worry about (as I mentioned in my article) and we’ll see what happens but companies like Blizzard I don’t think have any worries.

    Steam is known to be in bed with Sony and allows players to login to the steam store via PS3NetworkCredentials.

    Microsoft is on record to be in bed with Facebook and we know Zynga is right there and ready to start launching titles for Windows Phone (Nokia exclusives coming in Q4) and Windows 8.

    The hardcore gamers are not gonna be stranded as current games and newly released games for the desktop will work. Zynga and other publishing houses will have an advantage though. That’s what Newell and Pardo are complaining about.

    When they say they can’t compete, they mean they can’t compete without spending more money to remain relevant. I say Newell, Pardo, grow up and move on.
