Embarrassing – Nokia cut the price of flagship Lumia 900 to $50

This is so sad for so many reasons. Not even sure where to begin.

AT&T and Nokia have decided to drop the price of the Nokia Lumia 900 to $49.99 from $99.99 for a 2 year contract.

So let me get this straight…

  1. We are in July 2012
  2. New Windows Phone 8 units may be out by October 2012
  3. The Lumia 900 will be old technology at that point

Knowing those three things, you want people to sign a 2 year contract for this phone?

WHY?

As a consumer, if you did buy a phone now and in September found out that your phone was old, slower technology, how would you feel?

For Microsoft, AT&T and Nokia, this has been a PR, Branding and Strategy disaster.

I wonder if consumers are just being driven to Android and Apple en masse because the Lumia value proposition…well has no value.

Would you buy a Lumia 900?

    I would say, DON’T buy ANYTHING, not a phone, a tablet, or a PC till after Windows8 is released – then the deals will be flying…..

    I think it depends on the person. If someone wants a simple phone that will do what they need, get them access to the internet, be their first smartphone and dont want to pay a lot for it. It also now has plenty of apps, so this phone might make sense. It is afterall not a bad phone.

    However, for most people who read blogs like this, this phone will not make sense.

    I have been wanting to replace my “feature” phone for a year now but have been waiting for my contract to expire. What is really the difference here? Had I bought it a month before this news, I might be a bit angry, except for close to three months before, there were indications this would happen. So anyone buying one before then can only blame themselves.

    I have an old 3G iphone which I use as an iPod. When I go to the app store, 80% of the apps wont run or run so poorly the app store is useless. I realize this phone is not supported, and I am not complaining about that. My point is that what is worse? Having only 100,000 apps for the next 2 years, or effectively having none? Windows 7.5 is sidelined, but that doesnt mean it is useless. Nokia and MS have promised to support it. Will it be as good as Windows Phone 8? Of course not. But then these phones were pretty good for the hardware they ran on. That isnt going to change in the next year.

    And it sure beats buying an 2000 dollar laptop and finding it doesnt run well :)

    Probably if I need to change my phone. When Win8 phones come out in October, they won’t be selling for $49 per piece. However, all my phones are $0 with contract so $49 is still too expensive for me.
