PCPro’s list of requested Windows 8 improvements – Maintain first-boot performance

PCPro the UK website just put out a fantastic list of their suggestions for improvements that Microsoft could make for Windows 8.

Here are some of the ones I agree with:

Your PC will never be as fast as its first boot thanks to redundant Registry entries, thousands of cached files and folders full of clutter all slowing down your system as it churns through a slowly lengthening boot process.

In fact, it’s such an issue that a whole industry has sprung up around promises to make your computer faster, with some software claiming to optimise settings and others offering to scour your PC of junk so you don’t have to.

Surely it isn’t too much to ask for Microsoft to keep its own house in order, without the need for third-party cleaners.

    Personally, I spend a lot of time on optimisation and indeed there are many things you can do to speed up the boot.

    One of the things I do is Precache all the small files (say under 128K) which are used during the boot (and after also of course). What this does is reduce the times that the drive gets really slow (ie fetching lots of small files). It's much much faster to load up 128MB of data in a single file than 32768 smaller files of 4K..

    Anyway, my point is (as someone who's heavily into that), is that it would be impossible I believe for MS to really make the boot infallible since it's down to the user what they put on there. It's definitely getting better though - to be honest an SSD is the real solution..
