Our systems get more time to start up mainly because we install a number of softwares that are initiated in the beginning. However I also expect Windows 8 to be faster.

I'm not really sure what you guys have running on your systems, but when I moved from Win98 to WinXP. The Bootup was vastly improved even on one of my older systems. As a matter of fact I used a system I've had since 2003 until the near end of 2009, and it ran well. When I first switched to XP compared to what I was getting 98, it came up semi-instantly LOL. When I built a new system, I was originally going to go with Vista until the Win7 Betas and RC starting being released. I again saw a big difference when I switched from WinXP. When I first build the system. I ran XP and XP64 on it until the Win7 releases came out. Early last year I purchased Win7 Ultimate 64. My system boots up almost instantly. Once it get's past Boot/Post the actually loading of Windows takes almost no time. It only takes me a few seconds to get from the Windows splash screen to the desktop. I have a Windows installed on my 10K Hard Drive and my heavier programs. Everything else I have on my 7600. I know others with Win7 on their laptops and they have a pretty fast boot-up. Neither of my hard drives are close to full though I have a lot of music and video on 2nd. I also backup a lot of stuff on it. I have games, Photoshop, Fireworks, Office, and Rosetta Stone installed on it. I probably have a few other apps. It's running a Q6600 with 8GB of Ram and a good video card. I never get any slowness on the system and it boots up well under 20 seconds. The Windows 7 login screen could probably load maybe 3 or 4 seconds. I guess they could make it get to the desktop instantly once you enter password, but a few more seconds is just nit-picking.

I think they will make Win8 boot faster even if only an extra 5-7 seconds and with new MBs having a bios that loads almost instantly, I don't see why future Windows-based systems won't load in around 10 seconds.

I would like it to allow n00b users to kill "Adobe Quick Start" and all those unnecessary applications that boot with the system. Then I wouldn't have as much to do when people call me and say "My computer is REALLLYYYY slow..."

Agreed. What I'd like to see is an advanced tab for selecting start up procedures. Have everything divided into segments associated with icons or pictures of your choice. Stack the pictures up anyway you like. E mail first? Fine. Boot up time 2 seconds. While your reading your mail your computer is checking files etc. It can be structured to where it seems that it turns on instantly. You could have a separate file that played short video clips while booting. I think they will get to this eventually...can't believe it's taking so long. As a side note....I'd like to see my monitor flash when I have incoming mail from someone I know! Different flashes from different friends. I'm deaf so this is more of a need than a want. It would be cool for you too though.

I agree with Paul, these last few operating systems have been a total dog.
They had it good with XP, but they are now just changing aesthetics and applying bandaids to missing-limb wounds.

One thing I want back is the ability to start my computer at a given time and play music, but they have totally ruined that.

I agree, what is up witn windows 8?
XP start up took forever and vista did the same ? Windows 7 solved the start up problem ?
WOW this is a lie
You newb's dont know from which point to count the start up time.
Also you dont know that 2 fresh copy's of XP/VISTA/W7 XP boot faster because there is less to boot.

Windows 7 needs to be fixed, it has plenty of issues to start thinking about W8.

I think that's cool but I'm not sure MSFT would ever put that in.

Seems a little too progressive..
