Things I would like to see in Windows 8 – Part 1 – Faster Start up time
One of the things that has always bugged me about the Windows operating system is how slow the boot up times have been.
In fairness to Microsoft, this seems to be something they have started making some progress on.
Windows XP took forever to start up.
Windows Vista wasn’t that much better but Windows 7 has made real progress.
My PC takes 22 seconds to get to the login page from the time I actually start the PC.
Not too bad but I believe that we can do better.
Here’s what I would like to see: Windows 8 deployed with boot times of between 5 to 8 seconds on the high end.
It would work this way.. In the control panel, you would be allowed to specify and configure 3 applications that you would like to use as soon as your PC starts.
For most users, it would probably be 1) The browser 2) Mail and 3)Maybe an MS office application.
Based on those choices, upon bootup, those applications would be ready first and would have real time system resource priority.
Once the user was on and working, the rest of the operating system could slowly “wake up” in the background.
I think we are at the point where technology has caught up to this particular feature and most PC’s have enough CPU/Ram to make it happen.
What do you guys think?

I think that’s cool but I’m not sure MSFT would ever put that in.
Seems a little too progressive..

I agree, what is up witn windows 8?
XP start up took forever and vista did the same ? Windows 7 solved the start up problem ?
WOW this is a lie
You newb’s dont know from which point to count the start up time.
Also you dont know that 2 fresh copy’s of XP/VISTA/W7 XP boot faster because there is less to boot.
Windows 7 needs to be fixed, it has plenty of issues to start thinking about W8.
I agree with Paul, these last few operating systems have been a total dog.
They had it good with XP, but they are now just changing aesthetics and applying bandaids to missing-limb wounds.
One thing I want back is the ability to start my computer at a given time and play music, but they have totally ruined that.
Agreed. What I’d like to see is an advanced tab for selecting start up procedures. Have everything divided into segments associated with icons or pictures of your choice. Stack the pictures up anyway you like. E mail first? Fine. Boot up time 2 seconds. While your reading your mail your computer is checking files etc. It can be structured to where it seems that it turns on instantly. You could have a separate file that played short video clips while booting. I think they will get to this eventually…can’t believe it’s taking so long. As a side note….I’d like to see my monitor flash when I have incoming mail from someone I know! Different flashes from different friends. I’m deaf so this is more of a need than a want. It would be cool for you too though.
I would like it to allow n00b users to kill “Adobe Quick Start” and all those unnecessary applications that boot with the system. Then I wouldn't have as much to do when people call me and say “My computer is REALLLYYYY slow…”
Win 7 64-bit took too much space. Win 8 should be well managed and some driver problem in win 7 no webcam drivers and also introduce 3g tecnology in win 8 and pls dont introduce DirectX 12 WE didnt utlize 11 yet
